From 1962 to 1972, Malco Theater ad executive Watson Davis donned fangs and a black cloak to become Sivad (that's Davis spelled backwards), the vampiric host of Channel 13's horror movie showcase "Fantastic Features."
Every month, 55,000 readers look to Memphis magazine to provide them with in-depth coverage of every aspect of life in the Bluff City. Those readers represent the best and brightest in our community, the movers and shakers who help make this city - the corporate home of FedEx, the cultural capital of the Mississippi Delta, and, of course, the birthplace of rock-and-roll and the home of the blues - the very special place it is today.

In The Wizard of Oz, a mighty twister carried Dorothy's house over the rainbow. Okay, that was a movie, and the chances of a tornado hitting your house, or — despite our proximity to the New Madrid fault — an earthquake doing major damage are small.

I'm a sucker for anything cute and fun, zany and adorable, or happy to the point of giddiness. However, when it comes to restaurants, these descriptors usually apply to establishments catering to those under the age of 10.

They've lived side by side for nearly three decades, savoring the good years, growing stronger through the bad, their relationship as richly hued as the flower beds they've nurtured. A local church reaches the homeless where they live.
By Marilyn Sadler |
February 1, 2010
It's a teeth-chattering Sunday in early January, but the finger-numbing cold doesn't chill the spirits of those gathered at a downtown park to sing, testify, hear scripture, and praise God. At the front of the group — which starts with about a dozen but gradually swells to 50 or more individuals — are two men and two women clad in parkas, hoods, and scarves.

A new four-disk compilation stives to capture the best of the King
By Chris Herrington |
February 1, 2010
How do you put together a four-disc introduction to Elvis Presley? Ask my advice, and I'd probably tell you to seek out four separate but almost equally vital discs: Start with The Sun Sessions, which compiles all the essential music (and then some) that Presley recorded in Memphis with Sam Phillips to launch his career.

Consider how your words affect Memphis' future.
By Hannah Sayle |
February 1, 2010
Maybe you've heard: Memphis' biggest enemy is itself. I grew up here and as long as I can remember I've listened to talk of the obstacles Memphis faces, how it will never get out from under a pile so big, how unique, systemic, immovable, or irreversible the problems are.
