Come Celebrate India Fest 2012

Interested in experiencing what it means to be a part of the diverse culture and traditions of India?

Then head to the Agricenter International on Saturday, November 3rd, when the India Association of Memphis presents the 10th Annual India Fest. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“The theme is Past, Present, and Future,” notes Huzefa Mamoola, marketing director of India Fest 2012.

“It focuses not only on giving a glimpse of the past but also the current India with its rapid growth and development, as well as showcasing the future of India with economic and social prosperity.”

The festival opens up with band performances by Germantown Middle School and White Station High School. Singing the American and Indian national anthems marks the inauguration of the cultural segment. Then follows an array of performances by native Memphians and a competitive segment where four teams portray this year’s theme in order to compete for the best performance award. It wraps up with a live entertainment provided by RAGABOYZ, a band of 3 brothers belonging to the Patiala Gharana of Music.

At the festival, you will have an opportunity to taste Indian cuisines from all regions, shop for jewelry, apparel, and accessories in the bazaar, take part in children’s activities such as  henna, mask painting, costume character parade, and engage in interactive experiences that include turban-tying, sari-draping, and Hindi calligraphy.

“Our aim is to aid cross-cultural learning and awareness in a fun-filled atmosphere,” points out Mamoola. “Families will take away a basic understanding of some of the art forms (like henna and dances) as well as sciences (yoga and well-being).”

Lifeblood will also be present for blood donations. The festival supports Mid-South Food Bank. Children are encouraged to bring at least three cans of food for a free entry. Tickets are available at the door: $3/adult & $1/child. For details, go to
