Fun Ways to Celebrate Mom for Mother's Day

Celebrate Mother's Day all weekend long with one of these fun activities that will bring smile to your face as well as to your family.

Get Your Greek On - The 55th Annual Greek Festival kicks off Friday, May 10. If mom loves trying new foods, get in line for the Greek dinner they serve here, it's delicious. Then head out to the marketplace, or watch Greek dancing. And don't forget to pick up an order of baklava, the gooey, honey walnut confection that is simply devine. Friday & Saturday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. $3/adults, $1/ages 6-11. Free/5 & under.

Tap Your Inner Engineer • If you've never been to the Memphis Train and Trolley Museum at 545 South Main St., Saturday, May 11th, National Train Day, is the day to visit. Amtrak, MATA, and the Canadian National Railroad will be celebrating, with trains you can explore and trolley rides that rumble through downtown Memphis. The museum will be offering free admission all day Saturday (go here for our review) and lots of fun activities. Hours: Friday & Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday, noon-5 p.m. ($3/adults, $1/12 & under, Free/under 3).

Hike Your State Parks • Several state parks within driving distance of Memphis have lovely cabins that are worth a weekend's stay. Chickasaw, Pickwick, Fall Creek Falls, and Meeman-Shelby Forest all have relaxed accomodations that are also budget-friendly. If you're there this Sunday, May 12, Pickwick and Fall Creek Falls (along with 6 other parks) will be serving a Mother's Day Buffet ($14.95) that sounds scumptious. Go here for details

Enjoy Your Symphony • Since May has been drippy, Memphis Symphony Orchestra's Symphony in the Garden was moved to Saturday, May 11. Now you can pack up a picnic for mom and enjoy time together at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens ($20/adults, $5/kids). The Memphis Symphony League is hosting its annual picnic contest. Categories include Most Romantic, Most Creative, Most Gourmet, and Best Children's. The contest is free to enter and prizes, including tickets to the MSO, will be awarded at the concert. Gates open at 4 p.m. Music starts at 6 p.m. Tickets available at MSO and Dixon.
