Martha McKay and the Snowden House

More about Martha McKay and the Snowden House in Horseshoe Lake, Arkansas.

Our November 2012 issue of Memphis magazine takes a look at the past, present, and future of Horseshoe Lake, with special emphasis on the legendary Snowden House.  Here, Martha McKay — granddaughter of Bob and Grace Snowden, who built the home in 1919 — discusses the love affair she has had with the property since her childhood, and her efforts to compile and preserve her family's rich history.

In our November 2012 issue, we take a special look at Arkansas' historic Snowden House, the centerpiece of life around Horseshoe Lake, Arkansas.  Senior editor Michael Finger offers a brief video tour of the grand home, showing the 1949 renovation that transformed a fishing cabin into a Southern showplace.

I hate to criticize my esteemed colleague, but Michael Finger obviously doesn't know the difference between Carrara marble and a Clark Bar. In the second video, where he is wandering through the Snowden House, the fireplace he strolls past is the one located downstairs, and it's a relatively simple (but still nice-looking) brick fireplace. The very fine Carrara marble fireplace — originally from Ashlar Hall — is actually upstairs, in the home's considerably fancier living room. I know this because the Lauderdales visited the Snowden House many times, and one year even flew one of our family's dirigibles at Bob Snowden's aeronautical meets. But that's another story.
