A national survey lists "the very best physicians" in Memphis.
Your child comes home from school one afternoon, coughing and running a high fever. That nagging chest pain that you thought was just a pulled muscle from raking leaves doesn't seem to go away, and in fact gets worse when you exert yourself. And then there's the strange headache, a dull pain that spreads over one side of your face.
The human body is a marvelous machine -- when everything works properly -- but like any finely tuned piece of equipment, things can go wrong. And when they do, that's not the time to start asking friends or neighbors who is the best doctor to visit, or begin thumbing through the Yellow Pages trying to pick a physician whose name you might recognize.
To help our readers find the very best physicians in town, we present our 2006 guide to the city's Top Doctors. With only 45 physicians named here, representing 25 specialties, this is by far the most exclusive list of physicians we have ever published.
This year, we contacted a New York-based research group called Castle Connolly Medical, which annually conducts national surveys of the best doctors in America. Their physician-led team of researchers follows a rigorous screening process to select the top doctors on both the national and regional levels. Using mail and telephone surveys, as well as electronic ballots, they ask physicians and the medical leadership of leading hospitals to identify highly skilled, exceptional doctors.
Careful screening of these doctors' educational and professional experience is essential before any final selection is made among those physicians most highly regarded by their peers. Physicians selected for inclusion in our magazine's "Top Doctors" feature may also appear as Regional Top Doctors online at www.castleconnolly.com, or in one of Castle Connolly's national guides, such as America's Top Doctors, or America's Top Doctors for Cancer.
Choosing a physician is an important, and very personal, decision. If you are happy with the care you are receiving from your doctor, there is no reason to change physicians. But if you are new to town, are searching for a new physician, or perhaps need access to a specialist, this list can be your guide to some of the most qualified physicians in the Memphis area.
