SCS is a straight “A” school system
One of only 13 of Tennessee’s 136 school systems to achieve straight “A’s” in Academic Achievement on the Tennessee Department of Education Report Card, Shelby County Schools (SCS) provides a technology-rich instruction program to more than 46,000 students in its 51 schools. SCS is the state’s fourth-largest school system and includes all public schools in the county outside the city limits of Memphis, including those in Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland, and Millington.
SCS continues to exceed standards set by the State Department of Education and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and is the largest school system in Tennessee to be recommended for District Accreditation. SCS students also surpass state averages on both SAT and ACT tests, and outperform national SAT scores. SCS offers two International Baccalaureate Programs at Germantown High and Bolton High, and academies for rigorous study in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math are open at Bartlett and Southwind High Schools.
Newsweek magazine rates Collierville, Germantown, and Houston High Schools among the 1,000 best in America, and U.S. News ranks Collierville and Houston as two of Tennessee’s top 10 high schools. SCS also has more PTA members than any other system in Tennessee — roughly one-third of the statewide membership.
Special Programs and Services:
APEX (accelerated enrichment), AP/Honors, Special Education, & ESL (English as a Second Language)
SCS offers APEX (Academic Program for Excellence), a pullout program for academically gifted students. Screening for APEX begins at the start of third grade, but students in grades K-2 may also be eligible based on class performance. Middle school students are provided opportunities to enroll in courses for high school credit, and high school students can enroll in AP and dual credit courses for college credit. Plus, there are numerous options for honors courses and career/technical learning in grades 9-12.
A full range of special education services is offered in each of the 51 county schools for eligible students ages 3 to 21, who have disabilities. Resource programs and additional services, including speech and occupational/physical therapy, also exist at each school. Furthermore, over two-thirds of the schools have functional skills programs or expanded resource programs. SCS also provides a variety of support services for students and parents through its nationally renowned ESL (English as a Second Language) program.
Extracurricular Activities
Many extracurricular activities are available to SCS students, such as Odyssey of the Mind, Beta Club, Drama Club, Junior National Honor Society, National Honor Society, Foreign Language clubs, Key Club, Wordsmith, Newspaper and Yearbook, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Student Government. In addition, a wide variety of high school athletics programs exist, including: basketball, bowling, pom, cheerleading, soccer, football, golf, baseball, softball, volleyball, tennis, track, and wrestling. Middle schools offer boys and girls basketball and cheerleading.
