New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week is in full swing, and here are some looks I'm obsessing over so far. This delish look is served up by Red Valentino and was inspired by the fairy tale, Hansel & Gretel.  10 Crosby, the bridge collection offered by Derek Lam, shows these awesome shorts and chunky sweater — perfect for our fickle weather. Rock this look with thong sandals thru October, then put with tights and boots the rest of the season.  BCBG Max Azria goes wild with this luxe fur coat, which is on my personal wish list, BTW.

20 < 30 Looking Good at The Cove

20 < 30 Looking Good at The Cove

Last week, The Memphis Flyer celebrated some of the city's most interesting young people under 30 years old at The Cove. While these folks bring fresh ideas, innovative thinking, and passion to Memphis they also bring an innate sense of style.  She wears the pants. Kelly Miller. Prrrfect accessory. Mya Donald. Cool drink of water. Ziggy Tucker. Twice as nice. Preston Parrott & Alicia Moore. Two of my favorites! Ken Neill and Bruce VanWyngarden. Awesome folks from the Flyer, Britt Ervin and Matthew Writt with their significant others, Bobby Ervin and Holly Ashmore, producing yet another fabulous event.

Inspired Brides

Inspired brides are looking towards embracing their individuality for their Big Day. 2013 is showing all kinds of exciting trends, and here are some ideas that influenced our editorial in the upcoming February Bridal Issue of Memphis Magazine.  The hippie bride ... she is a free spirit. Love the hair piece!   Spanish Senorita — ethnic details abound.  The colorful bride is a gal who is confident enough to not wear white.

My Obsessions This Week — Studio 54

My Obsessions This Week — Studio 54

Studio 54 memorabilia will be auctioned this Saturday through Palm Beach Modern Auctions, which of course has led me to obsess over those magical nights ripe with American fashion and style.  Fashion designer Halston gettin' crunk with his crew — check out Bianca Jagger in her hooded Halston dress. She's the one making a silly face, BTW. It is fabled that one New Year's Eve party dumped 4 TONS of glitter throughout the night — pure heaven. This makes me dream of glitter manicures that are so hot right now. I just got my own glitter manicure from Jackie at Pavo Salon — love her!  My *new* vintage Chanel earrings might have actually been in the dance floor one night at Studio 54. Today, they will be reincarnated via...

What's Inspiring Me Right Now . . .

What's Inspiring Me Right Now . . .

The New Year is bringing new obsessions . . . right now, I can't get enough of: High-heeled sneakers (above). Perfect for the constant stream of Memphis basketball, which is something else I'm obsessed with. Anything Chanel. TONS of gold jewelry, everywhere . . . I'm thinking of piercing my nose just so I can add to my gold jewelry collection. And somehow, for no real reason at all, this image inspires me.

Behind The Scenes of the August Issue Fashion Shoot

Behind The Scenes of the August Issue Fashion Shoot

Mention that you’ve made a video taking viewers behind the scenes of a fashion shoot, and there’s always going to be somebody who will think it will show scantily clad models in their dressing rooms. Sorry, guys, but this isn’t a Victoria’s Secret catalog. What we do show is all the coordinated effort that goes into this feature — from the photographer, the stylist, the makeup artists, the various assistants, and yes, the models themselves. The result may look glamorous, but folks, it’s hard work. And what this video will also show is a bit of the magic that went into “Sizzle in the City” because — oh, let’s just give away the secret here — even though the models look like they are...

Best of Grizz T-shirts

Best of Grizz T-shirts

The short but exhausting NBA season is over and we all know who won the championship. Nonetheless, it was an exciting showing for the Grizz as there were significant bursts of energy throughout, a few major dissapointments, but most of all good clean fun at the FedExForum. One of the highlights of every game for me is seeing what the crowd is wearing. I have to say some of the most creative Grizz shirts came from local designers that took clever catchphrases and paired them with graphic designs that made winning t-shirts for all to enjoy. Here are two of the very best. Eric Evans, also known by his graffitti artist moniker Sache, has a licensing deal with our beloved Tony Allen and is responsible for the stash of TA tshirts that are worn with pride throughout the season...

Looking Good in the Memphis Flyer and Memphis Magazine Tent

Looking Good in the Memphis Flyer and Memphis Magazine Tent

The Memphis in May Beale Street Music Festival is a musical event that has garnered much deserved positive national attention, but I still like to think of it as a great little "festival family reunion" — everybody plans for this weekend months in advance just to boogie together on the Mississippi River. The music always rocks, but another highlight is hanging with old friends in the Memphis Flyer and Memphis magazine Client Appreciation Tent. Always front and center of the headlining stage, the tent is worth its weight in gold because of its location, and also because it means free beer, cleanish bathrooms, and freezing cold bottled water. This year we had a full-on summer weekend with temps close to the 90s and that ice-cold water was what got me through the...

Behind the scenes at Memphis magazine's fashion photo shoot

Behind the scenes at Memphis magazine's fashion photo shoot

"Come, gentle Spring! Ethereal mildness. Come!"  — James Thompson May fashion reflects the pastel trend in clothing right now — fresh mint, light aqua, pale pink, soft yellows. All of those sweet candy colors are wild right now, invading local retailers, and will most likely make their way into your closet. We shot the May 2012 fashion editorial for Memphis magazine weeks ago and I worked with a great team of talented people: Larry Kuzniewski behind the lens assisted by Dirk Olsen, Mary McNair and her assistant Alyx Ray created the crimped hair, Kendrick Simpson painted the ethereal face, and Annette Outlan directed our angelic model Meg Saunders — a young star on the rise.  I am always amazed by the clothing and accessories that end...

Memphis Game Day Style

Memphis Game Day Style

Memphis is a great town for sports and sports fashion is always a fun topic to cover. Many rules can be broken off the court in the name of team spirit. Face painting, clashing color combinations, and bizarre head decor are just a few. All of that and more are fair game when it comes to showing support. Don't be intimated by a little war paint or bright colors because it is always OK to be a loyal fan and to be proud of your team. I always break my own fashion rules when it comes to cheering for the Tigers and the Grizzlies. Rarely do I wear a graphic t-shirt but I almost always do when it comes to Tiger games. I have my choice collection of fitted t's — "Our Coach Is Cuter than Your Coach," retro faded white and blue old school athletic font "Memphis...
