Me and my boys at a game earlier this season. Here, I’m wearing retro Grizz colors modified to make my coveted pink headband pop with the turquoise necklace by Brave Design. My sons are wearing a Tony Allen t-shirts by Eric Evans at Sache and a custo...
It’s that glorious time of year again when the azaleas are in full bloom, the sun is getting warmer, and the Grizzlies are in the Play Offs. As fans, we’ve gotten a little spoiled as we sort of expect to go to these magical rounds of hoops and the hunger and thirst for more basketball is all consuming. An additional fuel to this fire is the fact that March Sadness came and went — and I’m not even gonna write about that any more because it’s time to focus and get motivated for the Real Thing. This is when the professionals are breaking a sweat and Memphians are super proud of the squad right now wearing the blue and pounding the paint. Mtown has its own style and the Play Offs make even the most disciplined folks go a little ham whenever the calendar rolls around to these last few weeks in April and with an eye turned towards May.
Grizz style has long been documented as rogue yet contagious. Fans have stockpiles of renegade t-shirts and I know more than a few that stock up specifically on what to wear during this incredible time. I’ve created my own Augusta Campbell Stylist’s Best Dressed Play Offs List thus far and hope to add more stylish folks as the games wear on. This fashion niche is quickly becoming my favorite as I get to dress ridiculously yet get away with it in honor of loyalty. The creative spirits overflow City Wide, wrapping everyone in this friendly fever ... and everybody’s lookin’ good!
1. Dana Daly
Also known as my Play Off Ticket Fairy 2014. Her enthusiasm and overall knowledge of everything NBA kinda makes her a dude but she’s so pretty she can get away with it. She’s also as witty as Amy Poehler, her celebrity twin. Here, Dana rocks the baby blue headband that sweetly matches her eyes and an original Grindfather t-shirt from Sache. Although her looks could stop a baller dead in his tracks, it’s her Custom GRIZZ Chuck Taylors that score big points. Even her brick house is painted yellow, y’all.
2. Graham Winchester
You may know Graham from his drum bangin’ beats in a variety of Memphis’ best bands including one of my faves, Devil Train. But this time of year, he morphs into Grind Grizzchester and proudly wears his blue and yellow. This awesome shirt is from Baer’s Den but Grind customizes his look by adding it to his own preppy style over a button down. A bad ass drummer disguised as a boy-next-door Memphis Grizzlies fan — brilliant.
3. Raquel Carls
Here’s another cute blonde that can take down any seasoned vet with her hoops intellect. Don’t mess with Raquel. She clearly knows how to hi lo mix her Grizz style. Purse is Michael Kors, top by Graham & Spencer, jeans are by Mother, and feather earrings by local artist Rachel Evans also from Sache. This type of combo is not easy to flow and disasters are easy to spot. Raquel performs this type of wizardry at Tigers games too.
4. Sean Haley
Sean strikes a pose with a highly coveted Mike Conley t-shirt; yet another design gem from Eric Evans at Sache. The artwork is clean and straight up, just like Conley himself. The image is also dead on and bears a sort of super hero logo emblazoned across the chest which is also indicative of Mike’s sheer otherworldly talent. Sean seals the style deal with a classic headband and noise makers — perfect accessories for the lady Grizz fan who likes to get LOUD.
5. Mannequin
OK, I know he’s not real but the outfit made me do a double dribble take and is making me so crazy jealous that I didn’t put it together myself. I Am Obsessed with RETRO GRIZZ colors. I mean, the red and aqua are so ugly together the combo is nearly paralyzing yet it conveys a person full of unstoppable confidence and total swagger. All Memphis.
These sporty items will likely land a Grizz fan on a best dressed list:
This awesome tank by www.dirtycottonmemphis.com is perfect for the warm weather and shows off our City’s trademark Elvis lightning bolt intertwined with Tony Allen’s now classic Grit n Grind abbreviation. Faded to perfection and super soft too.
Another Tony Allen reference but this time rolled up with the Piggly Wiggly logo. This design is by muralist @nosey42 and he has Grizz graffiti art tatted all over town. To hear him explain the meaning behind this shirt is sublime ... “the Pig is a classic and so is Tony Allen.” Correct.
More Than Words gift shop in Germantown carries these custom bracelets and cuffs with engraved messages unique to our beloved team. These are just right for game day or every day. Special snaps to Janie Lowery for sharing this arm candy with me.
Here's a tip: don't be afraid to mix hi and lo accessories (refer above to Raquel Carls). My retro fix is almost complete via my mini patent leather Chanel bag that I wore all over NYC at Christmastime with my Grizz beanie from the Grizz Den gift shop. A similar Play Off combo will be revealed soon. I promise.
Sooo many t-shirts and accessories and gear. Remember this: it’s totally OK to wear your crazy Grizz ensembles on non-game days during the Play Off season and to work, church, bar mitzvahs, weddings, etc. Did I miss a fab SuperFan? Hook us up in the comments section and I’ll add him or her to the List. Keep your photos coming (along with wins) and we’ll have a nice Best Dressed list compiled for a Grizz Gear Giveaway at the end of our run. But hopefully, that won’t happen anytime soon. Until then, GO GRIZZ.
