Looking Good in the Memphis Flyer and Memphis Magazine Tent

Looking Good in the Memphis Flyer and Memphis Magazine Tent

The Memphis in May Beale Street Music Festival is a musical event that has garnered much deserved positive national attention, but I still like to think of it as a great little "festival family reunion" — everybody plans for this weekend months in advance just to boogie together on the Mississippi River. The music always rocks, but another highlight is hanging with old friends in the Memphis Flyer and Memphis magazine Client Appreciation Tent. Always front and center of the headlining stage, the tent is worth its weight in gold because of its location, and also because it means free beer, cleanish bathrooms, and freezing cold bottled water. This year we had a full-on summer weekend with temps close to the 90s and that ice-cold water was what got me through the...

Behind the scenes at Memphis magazine's fashion photo shoot

Behind the scenes at Memphis magazine's fashion photo shoot

"Come, gentle Spring! Ethereal mildness. Come!"  — James Thompson May fashion reflects the pastel trend in clothing right now — fresh mint, light aqua, pale pink, soft yellows. All of those sweet candy colors are wild right now, invading local retailers, and will most likely make their way into your closet. We shot the May 2012 fashion editorial for Memphis magazine weeks ago and I worked with a great team of talented people: Larry Kuzniewski behind the lens assisted by Dirk Olsen, Mary McNair and her assistant Alyx Ray created the crimped hair, Kendrick Simpson painted the ethereal face, and Annette Outlan directed our angelic model Meg Saunders — a young star on the rise.  I am always amazed by the clothing and accessories that end...

Memphis Game Day Style

Memphis Game Day Style

Memphis is a great town for sports and sports fashion is always a fun topic to cover. Many rules can be broken off the court in the name of team spirit. Face painting, clashing color combinations, and bizarre head decor are just a few. All of that and more are fair game when it comes to showing support. Don't be intimated by a little war paint or bright colors because it is always OK to be a loyal fan and to be proud of your team. I always break my own fashion rules when it comes to cheering for the Tigers and the Grizzlies. Rarely do I wear a graphic t-shirt but I almost always do when it comes to Tiger games. I have my choice collection of fitted t's — "Our Coach Is Cuter than Your Coach," retro faded white and blue old school athletic font "Memphis...

Holiday Window Dressing

Holiday Window Dressing

One of the very best things about this time of year is enjoying retailers' holiday displays. The creativity that is put into the visuals is always festive and celebrates fashion as its highest art form. There is no doubt in my mind that fashion is art and holiday windows rarely disappoint. Lingering in front of these windows or seeing how retailers display their goods inside their stores always makes my brain melt and really gets me in the mood for the holidays. One thing I will say about Memphis is that our visual-arts community blends seamlessly with our fashion movers-and-shakers to create enticing window displays. There is of course the seemingly immortal mannequin in front of Flashback that is seasonally dressed in Santa gear and the remaining mannequins in the window...

The Power of the Purse

The Power of the Purse

There are few accessories that a woman can own that are more functional than a purse. However, this is also the one power accessory that shows the world who she really is or wants to be. Forget about the designer sunglasses or the stacked platform ankle boots. If a woman wants to portray status, it’s in the bag. I know many chic ladies here in town that put a lot of thought into what purse they are going to carry — and many of these bags travel safely over a woman’s left shoulder for many consecutive months. My purses are part of my family and I often name them — there’s my giant orange striped and camel canvas Gucci shopper named JLo, my classic black patent quilted leather 2.55 Chanel named Coco, my black mini fringed suede Yves Saint Laurent...
