St. Louis Catholic School Helps Downtown Memphis Commission Beautify The Hotel Chisca

Artwork by Mickey Hossenlopp

Downtown Memphis Commission and the Hotel Chisca Development Team partner with St. Louis Catholic School for a project building a more vibrant city through art.

Selected St. Louis student art banners will be displayed along the fence surrounding The Hotel Chisca enhance the curb appeal of this long-vacant building before and during upcoming construction. The artwork features images based on Memphis music history which is fitting since The Hotel Chisca is where Elvis was first played on air from the WHBQ radio studios in 1954 on Dewey Phillips “Red, Hot and Blue” show. Famous icons include funky chickens, Rufus Thomas, hound dogs, and Elvis, of course.

As a part of this community-oriented project, St. Louis students got the opportunity to learn about Memphis musicians, Memphis’ musical history, and its impact.

The 30 art banners will be unveiled in a ceremony Saturday, October 27 from 2 -3 pm at The Hotel Chisca featuring classic songs performed by the St. Louis School Show Choir and will tie into the RiverArts Festival taking place a few blocks south.
