50 Years of The Dive Shop

If underwater photographs of exotic locales appeal to you — not to mention food, music, and all things diving — don't miss The Dive Shop's  half-a century birthday celebration coming up Saturday, July 23rd, from 1-5 p.m. at 999 South Yates Road.Clearly those kinds of photographs appealed to Doug McNeese Sr., who  first thought of opening the store in 1959, while watching the old TV show Sea Hunt with his son Doug Jr.  At that time, McNeese  owned three stores dealing in records, jewelry, and toys. Well ... maybe they do, maybe they don't.But we're tired of taking his word for it. So now's your chance to tell us what you read in our magazine, what you like and don't like, and what you'd like to see more of.To that end, we've created a Memphis Magazine Online Reader Survey: just spend about five minutes checking off a few pages of boxes, and you'll be entered to win one of five $100 Folk's Folly gift certificates. Every survey-taker will also receive a $5 off coupon code good for renewing your existing subscription or ordering a new subscription. That's a...

International Humane Group Targets Memphis Animal Services

In Defense of Animals (IDA), an organization with 85,000 members worldwide, has issued an "Action Alert" about Memphis Animal Services, also known as the Shelter. The alert urges recipients to put pressure on state and local officials to "clean up" the facility on Tchulahoma and states, "we are concerned about reports indicating that things have gotten worse, not better" since the Shelter was raided in 2009.Among concerns cited are dogs being lifted by catchpoles to an elevated cage (shown here); multiple animals in the euthanasia room watching euthanasia of other animals, "a clear violation of American Veterinary Medical Association guidelines";  and no pre-euthanisia sedation given to the animals unless they are already agitated.Being named...
