Christian Brothers University has committed $12 million over the next seven years to launch the next phase of its Latino Student Success program which encourages stakeholders to develop partnerships in order to stimulate public, private, and nonprofit community investments in the expansion of quality education programming serving Hispanics. The commitment is made possible, in part, through a $3.6 million anonymous grant, as well as through CBU’s ongoing partnership with Latino Memphis. It will financially, academically, and socially serve over 100 Hispanic students throughout their four years at CBU.
“Christian Brothers University, as an institution founded on the Lasallian mission of providing educational opportunities to the underserved, continues to advocate for the education of all who stand to benefit their communities by gaining the benefits of higher education,” said Dr. Paul Haught, vice president of academics and student life. “So-called undocumented students belong to this class as much as anyone. If they are college ready, we invite them to share in CBU’s gifts of teaching and service. To that end, we appreciate all of the opportunities we receive to connect students with services and funds that make their education a reality.”
At a luncheon held last month, Alejandra Ceja, executive director of The White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, and John King, senior advisor delegated duties of deputy secretary of education at the U.S. Department of Education, delivered comments on behalf of The White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.
In addition to Latino Student Success, the Hola CBU initiative, a student-led organization that provides Latino and other students with opportunities for social and academic activities, both on campus and in the community, was recognized at the luncheon as well.
“Our university is grateful to accept recognition for our programming, which has proven to be overwhelmingly successful and vibrant for our Latino student population,” said CBU President John Smarrelli. “Each day, we work diligently among students, faculty and staff to serve and give back to the Memphis community.”
