Last week’s announcement of Condoleezza Rice, former Secretary of State, and Darla Moore, South Carolina financier, as the first female members of Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters, did more than just recognize two talented golfers; it kept the momentum going for female athletes across the board. Summer 2012 put a large spotlight on female athletes with tennis, track, beach volleyball, swimming, and gymnastics winning Olympic gold medals for the United States, and the announcement of female inclusion into the Augusta National “boys club” has only piqued the interest and participation of females in athletics, specifically golf. TN Shakespeare Company Announces 5th Season

Tennessee Shakespeare Company today announced the schedule for its fifth season of events, highlighted by a spring presentation of Hamlet at the Dixon Gallery & Gardens. The iconic story of a prince grappling with ghosts of past and present will serve as TSC's theme throughout the season, one in which its educational programming will continue to reach throughout the Mid-South. More than 70 schools from three states have felt TSC's impact since 2007. (During its 2011-12 season, TSC attracted a total of 12,000 patrons and made an estimated economic impact of $3 million.) Let me tell you, putting together the “Who’s Who” section of our annual City Guide is a grueling process. It begins with staff meetings to determine just which Memphians deserve such recognition, and those discussions can sometimes get a bit, uh, animated — ending with loud arguments, punches thrown, cheap liquor bottles hurled. After things have settled down and we've made the final selection of 100 or so people, though, the next step is to write or update the various bios. We glean the needed information and photos from various sources, then turn it over to a grizzled veteran of our staff to compile all of these bits and pieces into one article.
